Red Noses

A lot of Christians are going to be leaving the voting booths this year with red noses. In most cases, we are going to have to hold our noses tightly and vote for someone closest to where we stand as Christian voters.

There are a lot of hot-button issues that are being brought to the forefront-fighting terrorism, energy independence, social programs, taxes, high cost of health care, etc. All these are important, but they pale in comparison to the fundamental issue of life itself. We might have different positions on foreign and domestic security matters. But, what about the security of life itself-especially the unborn whose voices we never hear?

We've come so far that we have halted the execution of cold-blooded murderers because it is too painful to get stuck with a needle. Unborn babies, on the other hand, are cut to pieces and dropped in a garbage bag. It is absolutely astounding to hear candidates actually brag about how they are more solidly behind the pro-choice agenda (translation: abortion) than their rival candidate. What an incredibly evil thing to be proud of!

Nothing functions in isolation from a broader world-and life-view. The abortionists have salved their conscience by saying that this is not a viable life. Our courts have conceded that they don't know when life begins, but have nevertheless legalized abortion up to the partial birth. The result, not morals, is the goal.

What are the underlying premises for such irrational thought?

1. Evolution. There must first be a denial of creation and the Creator. Otherwise life would be seen as a gift of God, made in His image. Evolution is the religion of the abortionist. The strange bedfellow of evolution is environmentalism, where population control and the quality of life is up to man to determine. The "chance" of the evolutionist needs a helping hand.

2. Idolatry. The most serious mental degradation involved in abortion has to do with human sacrifice. Why do people murder unborn children today? I believe we all know. It is to have a better life. A child would be inconvenient and stand in the way of people's careers, lifestyles, reputations, etc. People kill another human so they can gain something. When human beings sacrifice other human beings so they can have these things, it is called "idolatry." Since they would not think of sacrificing some of the things or time in their own lives, they will just sacrifice their unborn children to the god of materialism.

3. Socialism. What this means is that the government will care for all your needs. One of the large issues at present is universal health care. This sounds like a great money-saver for citizens. What it in fact means is that the state will control your life from the womb to the tomb. What will be paid for and what will not be paid for will be in the hands of some bureaucrat in a cozy office. You can be sure that just as sure as abortion is the "law" of the land, so euthanasia will not be far behind. It will be touted as a benefit to the individual, but the opposite is true. What is good for society as a whole will far outweigh the benefit to the individual or God. That is socialism. If you could ask an aborted baby which he prefers, do you have any doubt what the answer would be?

4. Humanism. Man plays God. He makes the laws and he does what is in the best interests for man. There is no regard for biblical morals or dedication to anything higher than the top of a man's own head. The pressures of the masses determine moral values. Humanism is not desirous of facing confrontation, so the Bible and any mention of God is off-limits in this discussion. God's Law is outlawed.

More could be said about the issues that are before Christians when they vote. It is unlikely that we will have opportunity to vote for anyone we totally agree with on every issue. Some foolish ideas can be undone in the future. The murders of 50 million unborn children in the last thirty-five years cannot be undone. If someone running for an office does not respect and protect the life of an unborn child, what trust can you place in that person for your own life?

Christians have always had red noses after elections. They are only getting redder as time goes on, but the matter of protecting the lives of the unborn may never be compromised. It is an over-riding issue. It must never be a red-nose issue.
