What's normal? What's normal for most believers? How does it usually work for you? You're bored. Or maybe you just want to sit down, relax, and be entertained. So, what do you do? You turn on the television. You flip through the channels to find something decent to watch. You've seen this one, you're sick and tired of that one. Finally, you settle on a rerun of CSI. There's usually something intriguing about what this or that criminal has done. What's easiest to do is seldom the best. Natural inclinations and the regular routines are somewhat like gravity. If you were asked to make a list of the things that most people in this world want, one of the items they would probably desire is love, be it the affections of a spouse, the dependent love of a child, or the support of friends and family. The world has written countless songs of love, created companies that will find you love (for a fee), recited poems expressing the anguish of love, produced movies to watch when you're "in love," and trained therapists to help you "fall out" of love. Love is one of the most sought after commodities…

Hebrews 2:9-15 One heresy the kids always learn about in confirmation class is Docetism-the belief that Jesus was not truly human, or only appeared to be human. It was a common belief and a major source of controversy in the ancient church. Unlike some of the ancient controversies such as the proper date of Easter, this one was important. If Jesus was not human, then He could not be a substitute. He could not demonstrate that human nature could be redeemed, could be righteous. He could not taste death for us and thus could not be a propitiatory sacrifice. Monophysitism…

John 1:14 "The reason for the season" is a phrase that is sometimes used to point to the fact that in the midst of all of the commercialism and all of the partying and decorations, that we do not forget what we are celebrating in the first place. The reason for the birth of Christ is so sinners, people enslaved to the pollution and curse of sin, might be saved and restored to God. The real reason for the season is "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men of His good pleasure." It is about…

In a football game, the referees are very attentive to one thing-only one ball on the field at a time! Imagine what the results would be if the offense was allowed to have two or maybe three balls to work with on every play. It would be impossible to follow the old adage: "Keep your eye on the ball." Which one? Well, in the spiritual realm this can also become very confusing. Where do you keep your eyes? At the time Jesus was born there were numerous balls on the field, so to speak. There was the long-awaited birth of…
