If you were asked to make a list of the things that most people in this world want, one of the items they would probably desire is love, be it the affections of a spouse, the dependent love of a child, or the support of friends and family. The world has written countless songs of love, created companies that will find you love (for a fee), recited poems expressing the anguish of love, produced movies to watch when you're "in love," and trained therapists to help you "fall out" of love. Love is one of the most sought after commodities…

This seemingly innocuous exhortation that has become the coin of American evangelistic tradition for about the last five or six decades is the doorway to a form of legalism that is counterproductive to Christian progress. There is the subtle (or maybe not so subtle?) implication that it is the saving work of Christ in the heart that is the central issue for the would-be believer. The focus is placed on what is done in us via this language of "coming into the heart." That translates into determining whether Christ has been properly ushered in to produce all sorts of Christian…

of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, ‘If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.' But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified" (John. 7:37-39). In the middle of Africa there is a great desert called the Kalahari. As the hot sun approaches in the summer, the pools dry up, leaving the catfish stranded in hot mud.…

"Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ..." (Eph. 5:20). "Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation" (Hab. 3:17-18). Are you someone who always gives thanks to God regardless of your circumstances, or do…

"Entitlements"-we hear this word on a daily basis, yet seldom realize where it came from and what it leads to. Before we go any further, we must accept the fact that there are legal entitlements. If we contract to work for a certain wage, we are entitled to the salary paid. The U. S. Constitution tells us we are entitled to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Contracts, if fulfilled, entitle us to the terms. But it ends there. Today, "entitlements" have taken on a life of their own. For example, we are told that we are entitled to…
